Blind spots on commercial trucks are significantly larger and more dangerous than those on passenger vehicles. Because of the length and height of tractor-trailers, there are four major areas where the driver cannot see you, even with well-adjusted mirrors. When a passenger vehicle lingers in these zones, the risk of a catastrophic side-swipe or rear-end collision increases exponentially.

The Four Major No-Zones
Commercial truck drivers have four primary blind spots where other vehicles are virtually invisible:
Directly Behind: If you cannot see the truck’s side mirrors, the driver cannot see you. Trucks don’t have rearview mirrors.
The Right Side: The largest and most dangerous blind spot, extending from the cab back to the trailer’s end and three lanes wide.
The Left Side: Starts at the cab and angles back towards the midpoint of the trailer.
Directly in Front: The high cab means cars following too closely can disappear beneath the driver’s sightline.

When passing, do so quickly and only when you have clear space ahead of the truck. Avoid drafting or tailgating, as this not only places you in a blind spot but removes your ability to react to sudden braking or debris.
